Should I repoint or rebuild my chimney?

Repointing is right when the bricks are sound and only the mortar has failed. A rebuild is required when bricks are spalling, the structure is leaning, or deterioration extends deeper than the outer joints — usually above the roofline first, in a partial rebuild.
