Does masonry need to be sealed or waterproofed?

Exposed chimneys, foundations and older brick benefit from a vapor-permeable masonry water repellent, which blocks liquid water while still letting the wall dry. Non-breathable sealers trap moisture and cause spalling, so we never use them.
